There is no reason that physical limitations have to keep you from RVing and travelling. Although there are few ready-made RVs for people with disabilities, many manufacturers offer modifications to make their RV compatible or customized to specific physical needs.

In the last two decades, many more campgrounds have made handicapped accommodations available. National parks often feature wheelchair accessible walking trails which provide refreshing strolls to views and scenery. The more difficult trails may be more advertised, so it is helpful to ask the staff and check their information packets for what trails will be most accessible.

Customized RVs for Disabilities

There are many differing types of disabilities that each require a specific type of RV. This makes it nearly impossible for manufacturers to create a one-size-fits-all RV to accommodate people with disabilities. There are manufacturers who are very willing to create custom RVs with floor plans built to function best with a specific disability.

There are numerous mods that can be created depending on what’s needed. It may be a simple assist bar near the door or an updated shower. It might be a wheelchair lift or a customized furniture arrangement to make wheelchair space to make the interior completely accessible. Whatever the case, sit down with an RV manufacturer to see what they could do to assist you with your particular disability.

In the USA there is a club called the Handicapped Travel Club which publishes a newsletter and hosts an annual rally for disabled RVers across the country. A rally would be a great place to learn about mods that other RVers have used to facilitate camping and travelling with their disability. Occasionally this club shares handicapped-ready RVs for sale, as well.

Contact Possible Campgrounds

There are many campgrounds available now with handicapped specific parking spaces available. Calling a campground or checking their website for handicapped spots is a great place to start looking for a place to camp. A phone call with the local staff can quickly clear up questions you might have about whether or not the space will accommodate you.

If you can list the sort of things you need to accommodate you on your trip, the campground staff should have an idea of whether or not their campground has a campsite that could be a good fit for you. It may be as simple as making sure you have a flat, open space or one that’s slightly larger than those around it. If you know what exactly you’ll need to be comfortable, the staff will be able to help you find that or perhaps direct you to another facility.

Ask National Parks about Accessible Trails

RVers are generally travelling to see delightful scenery as well as to camp. There are far more options available for disabled people to enjoy trails and scenery than a few decades ago.

Many national parks offer wheelchair accessible walking routes or trails throughout the park. There may be some labeled in their information guides, but it can also be helpful to ask the park staff where a wheelchair can access or places that facilitate walking for anyone who is disabled or elderly and cannot walk some of the more difficult trails. They will point you in the right direction and help you to have a wonderful experience.

Overall, it is important to know exactly what kind of space and accommodations you need while travelling. Disabilities never stop travelling or RVing once you learn what you need to look for in a destination or a campground. Keep your eyes open for accessible areas and meet up with other travelers who have disabilities.
