No Box Single Folding Knife Review

No Box Single Folding Knife

By Sara Baird

I exist within a family of campers, wilderness seekers, Boy Scouts, and hunters. It can be said that we are a family that knows the value of a good pocket knife. So much so, pocket knives are frequently gifted for holidays and special occasions. As our children grew into teens and began seeking their own adventures, we found we needed an ample supply of pocket knives to quickly replace the knives lost to a lake, left behind at a campsite, or handed over to TSA. With this in mind, I jumped at the opportunity to review the No Box Single Folding Knife.

No Box Tools

According to the No Box website, https://livenobox.com, No Box Tool’s mission is to live outside the box. It was founded by a group of people who aspire to live their lives outside the box and to make the products that they use for their hobbies and passions. Their goal is to source “durable, functional, and beautifully designed” products that will inspire others to live outside the box as they see fit. They also pay careful attention to sourcing their products from artisans in sustainable ways with a focus on global enterprise and entrepreneurship.

I could not find information regarding the source of this pocket knife so I sent an inquiry to No Box Tools and received a quick reply. The No Box Single Folding Knife was created by one of No Box Tool’s founders, Robert Workman, and his son Erik who was inspired by his memories of scouting and is currently raising two boys involved in scouting. The knives are intended to inspire the next generation to “explore, unplug, and have fun outside the box”. These knives are intended to last a lifetime. The knife was designed by Mr. Deng, a long-time business partner of Rober workman and the designer of the No Box’s first product, the chef knife, and are produced in China.

The Single Blade Folding Knife

The knife arrived in an envelope and a small box with little packaging waste. This knife has a 4-inch handle made from stabilized wood with brass pins. The handle fits nicely in my average size hand and is easy to handle. It’s not bulky like some of the knives I’ve used and I found this knife easy to use. I do not experience the struggles I have opening and closing the knife that I often do with other folding knives. This blade opens easily and locks open. The lock on the back of the knife is a breeze to compress and close. Due to the ease of use and fit in my hand, I feel more confident with this knife than I have with others.

I set out to test the function and the quality of the blade. I started by slicing some tomatoes and found it sliced them better than my chef knife did (time for a new chef knife I think). I set to work testing how well the blade held an edge and was impressed. I whittled some wood, cut some branches, and cut up some cardboard for a craft project. I then resorted to slicing up an entire box into small strips and still found the knife sharp as when I opened it. I have no doubts that this blade will sharpen nicely when it finally does dull but I’ve been using it for three weeks now and there is no reason to sharpen it yet.

Cons

I could not find any reason not to recommend this knife besides your own personal preference for locking mechanisms.

This is a quality knife that I will be happy to carry with me as a tool for adventure and everyday tasks. This appears to be a knife that could easily last a lifetime but with a regular price of $35 would be replaceable during those inevitable times it gets lost. I appreciate that No Box Tools is aspiring to provide reasonably priced equipment to others to inspires their lives outside the box and that the product arrived with very little packaging waste. It is a knife I would be happy to use myself and proud to gift to the young adventurers I know.

It seems like a handy knife that would pack easily for on the go. I often find that I need a knife for various reasons while I’m out and about – especially for food. I don’t mind that it doesn’t lock!

We have a huge collection of knives. Most of which we use a few times then they sit in the drawer. We like to travel with a knife (in checked bags) because we are often away for longer times and picnic quite a bit. So having a good knife is critical. I liked the fact that you said this was easy to open. So many folding knives are not. Hubby will like the fact that it will hold an edge well. Thanks for this suggestion for a knife to try.

It does look like a great knife and does the job well. But is it better than the swiss army knife. That knife I always use when I am traveling but to honest, I never use it. I thought I would use it for my outdoor/hiking adventures but seriously, the actual knife I probably never used and used the corkscrew on it more. If I needed a knife, I would consider buying this but I dont think I would take it on my travels. (However, I do like the handle of the knife, looks a bit stronger and wider, so for me, a better grip when using it).

I’m not fluent in the rules for what you can fly with but I understand that TSA agents make the call for smaller items like this. My daughter forgot a favorite pocket knife was in her bag and ended up handing it over. She was kicking herself for not leaving it home.
