Camping Test of the new Wolf’em Sticks

Wolf'em Sticks 1

Wolf’em Sticks are a new, fun and effective way of cooking over a campfire.

By Jessica Shouse

One of my favorite things about Summer is camping and one of my favorite things about camping is hanging out with family & friends around the campfire. Roasting smores & cooking over the fire is a favorite past time. I was recently introduced to a new product that takes on a new twist on this classic outdoor activity, Wolf’em Sticks. I had the opportunity to test them out on our recent Spring Break trip to Moab. They did not disappoint. We wolfed down lots of yummy treats during our review!

Wolf’em Sticks were invented by brothers from South Jordan, Utah as a project for an entrepreneurship class. I’d say the boys knocked the project out of the park! The brothers created the Wolf’em Stick because they wanted to help friends and families experience the magic of spending time around the campfire. Something I wholeheartedly believe in as well. Wolf’em Sticks are a great way to add some yummy variety into your camping menu. Something our family very much needed. To say we were bored with our normal rotation of the same 3-4 meals is an understatement.

So just what are Wolf’ems you might be asking? Wolf’ems are roasted biscuit dough cups that you fill with anything that sounds yummy. Each Wolf’em Stick comes with an attachment that makes it easy to cook your Wolf’ems right up. We used canned biscuit dough for our testing. The product website, www.wolfem.com , has detailed, user friendly instructions. As a quick rundown, you mold the biscuit dough around the Wolf’em end and then roast over a camp fire for about 5 minutes or until your desired doneness.

One thing that my entire family really enjoyed about the Wolf’em Sticks was the easy, rotary turn handle. This made for easy roasting and even cooking. Something hard to achieve with a traditional roasting stick. After we cooked up several Wolf’ems we were excited to taste test.

I wanted to test both something savory and something sweet. For something savory we filled a few of our Wolf’ems with a family camping dinner tradition of “Campfire Stew.” Typically, we serve this one pot dish in a bowl with a crumbled cracker toping. Filling hot Wolf’ems with the stew was a much welcomed, delicious take on a classic favorite.

To satisfy our sweet cravings we filled our Wolf’ems with chocolate pudding, topped with raspberries, strawberries and whipped cream. Oh my, I think those yummy little devils just replaced smores as my top camping treat! Another plus about the product website is the access it provides to lots of easy recipes for you to try out.

In addition to the Wolf’em attachment, the kit comes with a hot dog/marshmallow backwards facing safety fork attachment. Both easily attach and detach to the rotary handles. The second night of our trip we built another campfire. This time we tested roasting marshmallows for classic smores with the Wolf’em Sticks. With close supervision, my 7-year-old son roasted his own marshmallow. I feel the design of the Wolf’em Sticks was safer for him to use on his own, with Mom close by, than our old, simple metal roasting sticks. My mom even took her turn toasting her own mallow. Wolf’em Sticks really are fun for the whole family!

Another plus that I really enjoyed about The Wolf’em Sticks is that they are designed for easy travel & storage, making them great for backyard firepit nights, family camping, even solo backpacking trips. Wolf’em Sticks are great for date night, family reunions, scout camps and more. I am excited to have started a new, fun, exciting, family tradition!! We will be using our Wolf’em Sticks for many adventures to come!

I just hope it gets available in India soon. The camping trend has been catapulting here like never before and I think this would be a great addition to the backpack. I loved the idea of “Campfire Stew’!

Looks like a great product! My grandfather loved barbecue parties so we had them quite often when we were kids. I bet he would have enjoyed using this product, too.

What a fantastic idea. I am not a camper but this would certainly take away a lot of the angst in trying to cook on an open fire. I love all the different things you can do with the Wolf’em sticks. I would love to try your chocolate pudding topped with fruit recipe.

Interesting suggestion. We’ve just come back from a camping trip in New South Wales, Australia. Kids love doing the marshmallows – usually with a grubby old stick! Will check out.
