PS: Some background info on Marinel de Jesus is included below:
Brown Gal Trekker (Marinel de Jesus) didn’t discover hiking until much later on when she started her career as a lawyer. She’s a first generation Filipina who moved to the U.S. when she was in her teens. Her love for hiking started when she joined Meetup.com as a member which shortly led to her becoming a hike leader for various outdoor groups in the D.C. metro area. Brown Gal Trekker combines her love for mountain trekking with her passion as a budget backpacker/traveler. As a result, her favorite type of travel is mountain trekking in remote and lesser known regions globally. After over 10 years of being a hike leader and organizer for Meetup, she launched her social enterprise, Peak Explorations, based on the notion of promoting the local tourism in developing countries where mountain trekking is the prominent activity. Peak Enterprise also aims to scout lesser known trails to connect the western world with a much more raw and authentic hiking experience. As such, Brown Gal Trekker scouts these trails herself solo or with a few hiking friends.
Since the inception of her social enterprise, Brown Gal Trekker has managed to identify local trekking companies that embrace the notion of empowering women in the outdoors. To date, Peak Explorations has launched its own Women Trail Leaders program which features female guides and porters worldwide. Brown Gal Trekker believes that the recognition of such women leaders on the trails will only empower more local women in countries like Peru, Nepal, Tanzania, Mongolia and others alike to venture into the world of trekking by assuming roles as guides, porters or even as female entrepreneurs to start their own local trekking company. In that sense, women who have the passion for the outdoors will gain the confidence they need to go for a role that is traditionally dominated by men.
In support of Peak Explorations, Brown Gal Trekker’s blog showcases content that celebrates the experiences of diverse group of women in the outdoors and travel world. One project, Don’t Date a Girl Who Treks, aims to increase the visibility of women in the outdoors by featuring photos and videos of women hikers worldwide via a short film to be submitted to various outdoors film festivals. You can learn more about the project HERE. In addition, the Outdoor Women’s Voices, Women Trail Leaders and Feedompreneurs series on the Brown Gal Trekker blog all aim to inspire readers to travel, hike, start a business or simply pursue one’s dreams.
Brown Gal Trekker’s latest project is her video-podcast series called ON MY WAY! FROM A LAWYER TO A MOUNTAIN NOMAD. The series tackles her ultimate goal of leaving her 14 year career as a lawyer to pursue her dream of being a full-time entrepreneur and a mountain nomad. To learn more, you can check her introduction of the series HERE.

It is interesting and inspiring to see your video. As a couple traveler, I personally often wonder what it would feel like to travel solo. I guess having traveled a lot, few things would be easier but then I know few things would be difficult to, safety being the major concern. Still I would like to go on solo trip someday and your story inspires me to do it
I also think Marinel is inspirational!
The solo that she travels is quite something and she seems to be loving it. Quite an inspiration. I like my solo but also love company. A mix of the two keeps me going.
Balance is always a beautiful thing 🙂
I love solo traveling so I travel alone most of the time. It’s amazing to hear the stories of another solo female traveler as well. I love her spirit and her adventure across the globe.
Go you!! I love that you are out there exploring the world. 🙂
I admire her courage in her solo adventures! Honestly, I can’t imagine myself doing solo adventures and as extreme as hers. Setting my fears aside, there is also a fact that I enjoy travelling more with my husband. I guess solo travels is not really for me but I really applaud solo travellers for pursuing their dreams! 🙂
I agree, she is a courageous lady.
There’s so much that you can learn when you travel on your own. I think it’s also a great way to grow as an individual. It was nice watching the episode. I think women should consider going on adventures on their own!
I agree, Alison. Solo adventure is an amazing way to facilitate growth.
Oh so true! As hiker-lover and a girl I think it would be tons of fun for me too. It’s been too long since I last did it solo, I think it might greatly refresh me.
Go for it, Lyosha! Let us know about your travels!
That’s great that Marinel figured out how to solo venture and explore the world for herself. I know I love travel, but I’m not sure I could be the kind of person to do that by myself. I did love road trips by myself though. I thought they were pretty awesome and lots of time to just sit and think and watch the amazing scenery fly by.
I love the time to reflect and watch the landscape, too!
I used to travel alone for conventions and meetings all the time. Now I travel with my hubby and baby. I love to travel either way 🙂
Haha yes! Couldn’t agree more — all travel is good travel!
I’m currently not a solo traveler but have been in the past. It is so empowering to hit the road by yourself with no one else to answer to. One thing I haven’t done yet is travel to a country where I don’t know the language by myself yet. It sounds and looks like Marinel has had some amazing adventures on her own!
I agree! She’s a total solo adventure boss!
I have never tried to travel by myself but that could be a very exciting adventure. Solo travelers are so inspiring!
I think so too! Marinel is awesome!
I am such a baby, when it comes to being adventurous on your own, but I can see the reward aspect of it.
Oh it can be terrifying, for sure! Yes, rewarding too, but I don’t think it is babyish to acknowledge the scary aspects!
Travellig solo is something every woman should do at least once in a lifetime. Or even at least once a year-
Sabrina, you are a woman after my own heart. I agree!
It is for me always interesting to see and understand others why they are travelling the way they do. Even though I personally prefer to travel together with my wife, I see also the benefits in travelling alone. Of course I think the complete independence from anything is truly a thing while travelling alone. Also I think it gives you the chance to learn about yourself a lot more and also grow on the experiences that you make.
Hendrik, I agree! I love the company of loved ones, but I think I evolve and grow more when I get out alone.
I’m not really a solo traveller, and prefer to share my experiences with my wife in real time. However I do get the charm of solo travel. Marinel, for instance seems to have an awesome time doing it.
Yes! She really does show how rewarding solo travel can be.
What an inspiration Marinel is for others! I still don’t know that I would travel by myself, but more power to her and to the others who do!
She inspires me too!
Wow what an inspiring lady. I’ve done solo adventures before, but just in a city. Never had it in the mountains or in different countries like South Africa. I don’t think I can do it on my own though, haha. Kudos to Marinel de Jesus
I am with you. I day hike alone and do solo urban travels, but big solo expeditions? Yikes! Marinel shows me it is possible.
I haven’t traveled solo for a very long time. I’m so used to having my husband and kids with me. Last month, I went to the metro capital and it was a strange feeling to be by myself on the plane and no kids to tend. haha But I was thankful. A new opportunity.
Sigrid, I think it’s so cool that you saw the treasure in that atypical experience. I am glad you got the opportunity!
I love this. I think traveling on your own is underrated. Solo trips can be some of the best
Rock on! I agree!
I love traveling but I always think travelling solo would be boring. I should probably try a solo trip for a change
Ivie, do it!! ?? And let us know how it goes!
This was so so inspirational! Thank you for sharing this. Thank you for inspiring me to take the chance and travel solo!
Samantha, thank YOU for watching. Can’t wait to hear about your solo adventure.
I’d love to travel but I would be scared to travel on my own. So many things could happen with being the only one
It can be an intimidating experience at first.
I feel like a kindred spirit in Marinel. I also felt like nobody else wanted to go on trips or adventures with me. It’s amazing how liberating it is to finally jet out on your own. Like she said, travel and adventuring evolves over time. It’s all about baby steps.
She has so many good ideas and wisdom. I am so happy she agreed to chat.
Travelling solo is not something I have ever done tbh but I would love to. It must make you grow enormously as a person and be amazing to learn about yourself this way
Yes I agree. It’s such an awesome opportunity to stretch ourselves!
I have never been on a solo adventure but then I am very anxious and also really clueless with travel – I have no sense of direction!
Laura, I hear you! I took a navigational class and highly recommend it. The book “Staying Found” is also helpful.
Marinel looks like she has so many great adventures! She really is so lucky! I love travel and exploration and I would certainly do this solo too! Love her spirit and determination and admire what she has achieved with trekking all over the world.
I agree—I am really inspired by her pioneering spirit.
