There are hundreds of dreamy locations – Mauritius, the Maldives, Seychelles – but we wouldn’t suggest going there for watersports. They’re more the sort of place to go and sip cocktails on the beach and have someone give you a massage.
But when it comes to combining dreamy vacation destinations and an added splash of thrill, there are some truly incredible locations renowned for being a paradise and a thrill seekers paradise.
Read on for three of the most dreamy vacation destinations for thrill seekers.

Costa Rica
Adventure lovers will be right at home in Costa Rica.
You can surf some of the best waves in the world or walk through dense rainforests – there’s something for every type of adventurer here! But if you’re coming, we’d recommend checking out volcano.cr and trying watersports. Watersports don’t get much better than in Costa Rica. You’ve got the ocean, Lake Arenal, and rivers – all perfect for watersports. Lake Arenal is perfect for wakeboarding, or you’ve got The Pacuare River for a rafting experience unlike any other. The lush scenery and exhilarating rapids will surely challenge even seasoned rafters.
Tamarindo is known for its incredible surfing conditions and beautiful beaches. If you want to get your heart racing even faster, try zip-lining through Monteverde Cloud Forest and soar above treetops while taking in stunning views of the rainforest below.
The Pacuare River will give you an experience unlike any other with its lush scenery and exhilarating rapids that will surely challenge even seasoned rafters.
New Zealand
We’d be silly to talk about dreamy destinations and not mention New Zealand – the land of hobbits and elves (Lord of The Rings reference) and incredible surfs. Not only that, New Zealand is famous for its extreme sports and stunning scenery; it’s the ultimate destination for adventure lovers (after Costa Rica).
If you’re looking for adrenaline activities, look no further than Queenstown – also known as the world’s adventure capital. Bungy jumping was invented here, so it only makes sense to jump off the Kawarau Bridge or Nevis Bungy, both over 100 meters high.
Or you’ve got skydiving. Skydiving over Lake Taupo gives the best views of New Zealand’s beautiful landscape – combining the free-fall rush with breathtaking views of mountains and the lake below. But if you’d rather keep your feet on solid ground while still getting your heart racing, try white-water rafting down Tongariro River or go caving in Waitomo Caves, where glow worms illuminate underground rivers, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.
Switzerland
While Switzerland has a reputation for chocolate and watches, it’s also a great place for adventure…the fact there’s scrumptious chocolate to have at the end of the day is a bonus.
The Swiss Alps is the place to be if you want adventure. Skiing and snowboarding are massive in Zermatt, home to the iconic Matterhorn and some of the best slopes in the world. The adventure doesn’t stop there; mountain biking, hiking, or even paragliding for a bird’s-eye view of beautiful landscapes are perfect in the summer.
Another spot where you can have fun is Interlaken. This area lies between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and it’s famous for skydiving. Jump from planes over breathtaking views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains, and you’ll have the experience of a lifetime.
Practical Travel Tips for Thrill Seekers
Embarking on an adventure-filled vacation requires careful planning to ensure you make the most of your experience while staying safe. Here are some practical travel tips for thrill seekers heading to these exciting destinations:
- Pack the Right Gear:
Adventure travel often demands specialized gear. Depending on your destination, you might need everything from wetsuits and snorkels to hiking boots and thermal clothing. Ensure you pack appropriately for the climate and activities. It’s also wise to bring a basic first aid kit, a waterproof bag, and a reliable backpack to carry your essentials.
- Book Activities in Advance:
Popular adventure spots, especially in peak season, can fill up quickly. If you’re planning to bungy jump in Queenstown or go zip-lining in Costa Rica’s Monteverde Cloud Forest, booking in advance guarantees your spot and sometimes saves you money. Look for certified and reputable companies to ensure your safety.
- Consider Travel Insurance:
Adventure activities come with risks, so having comprehensive travel insurance that covers extreme sports is crucial. Make sure your policy includes coverage for the specific activities you’ll be participating in, such as skydiving, white-water rafting, or skiing.
- Respect Local Regulations and Customs:
Each destination has its own set of rules and cultural practices. Be mindful of these, especially when participating in activities that might impact the local environment. For instance, some areas in Costa Rica might have restrictions on wildlife interaction, or certain trails in New Zealand might require permits.
- Hire Local Guides:
For many activities, especially those that involve navigating unfamiliar terrain, hiring a local guide is invaluable. Not only do they provide safety and expertise, but they also offer insights into the local culture and environment that you might miss otherwise. This can enrich your overall experience while ensuring you stay on the right path.
- Stay Connected:
Although adventure travel often means disconnecting from the daily grind, it’s important to have a way to communicate in case of emergencies. Carry a fully charged mobile phone with a local SIM card, or consider a satellite phone if you’re venturing into remote areas. Inform someone about your itinerary and expected return time, especially when going on solo adventures.
- Prioritize Safety:
Above all, prioritize your safety. Follow instructions from guides, wear appropriate safety gear, and don’t push your limits beyond your experience level. Thrill-seeking is about enjoying the rush, but not at the expense of your well-being.
