Pauline Alba tries out and reports on the Kamui Sleeping Pad.
Sleeping anywhere other than your bed you struggle to get a good night’s rest. It can even be more difficult when camping when you need to transport and provide your own sleeping mats. Finding a product that works for you, transports well, and is easy to use can make the process easier. This review will focus on the self-inflating sleeping pads from Kamui.
Kamui
This company was formed by Yumi Ohkura an outdoor enthusiast and mother. Through her love of the outdoors and passion for encouraging others to get out and try it, she decided to develop products to help others feel more comfortable in their experiences. She has a strong belief that outdoor experiences can help strengthen family bonds. The company has focused on a couple of products that will help families start to explore and hopefully enjoy their time outdoors. They develop quality products that are simple, comfortable, and functional with a lower price range.
Kamui Products
This company has focused on a couple of items that will help you start your camping experience. The products are very reasonable if you want to purchase just what you need. They have a portable camping chair that is lightweight and easy to transport for about $45.00.
You can also purchase an outdoor fleece blanket that is waterproof for $30.00, a beach blanket for $18.00, and a 6lb sleeping bag for $50.00. The last item is what we will look into more. The Self-inflating sleeping pad.
To find the Kamui Sleeping Pad check out this website: Kamui. The sleeping pad sells for $48.00. There are many options around this price, so make sure to really look at the quality and functions it can provide. The Kamui products have received high reviews on the quality of their products.
Kamui Sleeping Pad – What do you need to know?
If you are just starting out and are trying to determine what you need to carry out on your adventures there are many things you will need to consider. How much room do you have in the car, will you have electricity, will be you backpacking into your site, and what level of comfort are you expecting?
This is when you need to know more about the R-Value of your sleeping pad. The R-value is how much the mat will resist heat loss, which means your body’s heat. The R-Value can range from 1-10 with around 5 being a good value for most experiences. The research states that women need a little higher R-Value as well due to being cold sleepers tend to have less capacity to produce heat while sleeping.
Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad
The Kamui self-inflating sleeping pad is about 2 in. thick and has an R-value of about 5.7. One of the benefits of it being self-inflating is that you do not need electricity or to carry a pump to fill up your mattress. Another is that is it made of both air and foam that will resist losing its heat and provide more comfort.
One addition that the Kamui pad includes is the ability to connect to other pads creating a large base for a couple or more of a family. This ensures there is no gap between the pad to allow cold ad moisture in. The pads can also be connected vertically to give you a more comfortable base for more protection from the cold. Check out this video to see the size and best practices in use.
Using the Sleeping Pad
The pad will come rolled up into the provided storage sack. It is recommended to store the pad outside the sack to decrease the amount of time the foam is condensed. This allows the pad to rebound faster on your trip. You can slide the full pad under a bed or store it behind a door until it is time to go.
When you are ready to use it, you will take it out of the bag and allow it 5-30 minutes to self-inflate. To inflate there is a small cap on the corner you would turn to open or close. If you are in a hurry or would like a little more air, you can blow into this area to fill it up more.
My Review
I found the pad to be comfortable. It may be a little skinny and may not allow you much room to move around while remaining on the mat. The rolled-up size would make it difficult to take on a long hiking trip but is easy to find a place in the car.
We used it the most at our camper when we would have friends or company come and stay in a tent. It was brought out during the day to provide comfort sunbathing or for an afternoon nap. Allowing the kids to play on it during the day showed the quality of the material. It was able to withstand more than what you would put it through just sleeping on it.
I feel that they considered many factors when making this product and found a price point that is reasonable. I would recommend this product to any campers looking for an option like this.
Having a self-inflating mattress is convenient when camping and traveling.

A good sleeping pad is such a game changer when it comes to camping – I won’t go camping without my self-inflating sleeping pad – so comfy!! This one looks great quality

I actually just bought a camping pad and wish I had known about this one. Wonderful that it’s self-inflating so you don’t have to use power to inflate it (or blow it up manually!) Also good that it can be attached to others to prevent gaps in protection from the cold ground underneath. Looks like a great product!
I’m not much of a camping person, but if ever I would go camping, this sleeping pad would definitely be on my to-bring list. 🙂
It does look pretty comfortable for a sleeping pad that is both light and slim. I think it’s worth paying for good quality gear when sleeping out, especially when it’s cold. I like the sound of the waterproof outdoor blanket too.
First of all, I agree with the founder in saying that outdoor experiences help a family to bond. I really like self inflating stuff because, being a light traveler, if I can skip the pump that’s good for me. Good to know it uses both foam and air. Thanks for the review.
That looks like a great sleeping pad. And I like that it’s not bulky.
When venturing outside, I think it’s crucial to pack the appropriate equipment. For people who enjoy the great outdoors, this product is excellent. Given how functional and convenient this item is, you don’t need to keep worrying about how to sleep comfortably. Its features are also fantastic! Hopefully I can soon sample some Kamui products!
That looks comfortable despite how thin it is. Id take this over a cot any day! Thanks for sharing!
The Kamui self inflating sleeping pads is very convenient for campers and it’s easy to store and inflate without use of pump or electricity. The sleeping pad has a relatively higher R value to resist body’s heat loss. It’s also great that it can be connected to other pads to create a larger base . I also loved its multipurpose use to relax with family, sunbathing or for kids to play. All in an absolutely reasonable price of $48. I would highly recommend the Kamui sleeping pads. It’s very inspiring that the owner has created such a product to encourage outdoor experience and strengthen family bonding.
That is a great all-weather sleeping pad, it looks very comfortable too.
This is such a helpful product for all the campers out there! The material looks comfy and great. Loved your review 👌🏻🙂
I like that this sleeping pad self inflates without the need for a pump. This is my issue with my camping mattress, it takes ages to fill with air, requires a pump, and it also deflates by morning, with me ending up sleeping on the ground. I will look into this sleeping pad, as I would like a mattress that doesn’t actually deflate over night. I like that you can use it both in winter and in summer.
I want to go camping but the idea of sleeping on the ground makes me nervous. I suffer from chronic pain and laying on hard surfaces probably isn’t a good idea. I would need a good air mattress or something like that.
Being able to get a comfortable sleep is so important and a best thing to have. Can’t wait to check this out
The sleeping pad sounds like a really useful product. It helps to be as comfortable as possible when you go camping. I love that it self inflates!!
That’s true, the size doesn’t seem very forgiving but it does seem like a great product for sleeping outdoors when traveling light.
Sleeping pads have come a long way over the years. This looks so comfortable and easy to use.
I love that it self inflates! This will make camping so much easier.
My husband loves camping. This would make a great gift for him.
The Kamui sleeping pad looks like a great sleeping pad for car campers. I know that I need a lightweight small mat because my main activity is long-distance hikes (often in the alps). But I have to admit that the Kamui mat looks much more comfortable than the one I have. I am upgrading to an air mat though…..
If I see something different for me, I won’t express much but this does look good.
This looks like a comfy pad. I know when I’m out I need to be comfy or else I can’t sleep.
This looks SUPER comfortable! I haven’t been camping in years, but if I ever do I’ll be sure and get one of these beforehand! Maybe even some for the family as well! Thanks for sharing!
I must admit I am a bit like the princess and the pea – a very fussy sleeper. So a good sleeping pad like from Kamui might make camping work for me. I love that it is self inflating. But it might be too skinny for me. Good to know they have other good products too that are reasonably priced.
Seems handy for going camping and it looks comfy. Also, that’s good it’s easy to carry because that is important.
I like the sleeping pad! Given my new office and life now, I think I just might order for it!
Fabulous suggestion. I’m all about good sleep even when camping. The Kamui Sleeping Pad seems like the perfect addition to my camping gear. Thanks for the great tip!
I have a feeling I would purchase this product when it is time to go camping. I love the quality and the fact that it is compatible.
The quality of this one looks good. And I think I’ll check out with it. But the usual question WILL I GET IT HERE…
This is so great! I love the idea of being able to sleep comfortably without having to drag an inflatable mattress around.
