Eternal Flame Falls is located in Western New York and is just a 50 minute drive from Niagara falls. Eternal Flame Falls features a height of 30 feet, but more impressing is the flame behind the waterfall! I visited this waterfall while driving back home from a weekend trip at Niagara Falls. I couldn’t believe that this waterfall actually had a fire just behind the waterfall and I just had to see it for myself to believe it!
This waterfall has a small grotto that emits a natural gas that is used to produce the flame. According to research this flame can be seen nearly all year round. The flame can sometimes go out and sometimes needs to be re-lit.

It was about a 0.52 hike to the falls. It was a little crowded that day so I had a wait a little while to get a good picture of the waterfall, but it was well worth it! This was a perfect stop for an easy hike to see my first waterfall in New York!

DRIVING DIRECTIONS
Eternal Flame Falls is located about 67 km south of Niagara Falls and is around a 50 minute drive. I did get a little lost when trying to find this waterfall and had to ask a few people for directions. This waterfall is located in a section of Chestnut Ridge Park. The actual park is located a little further north from the start of the trail head. A big help to me was looking for the white picket fence off of Chestnut Ridge Road. I have included a map to directions to the Trail-head parking below.

wow this place truly looks breathtaking I love it, is it a hike to get there? How many miles you think?
Oh wow, this looks incredible. I haven’t been there.but will definitely add this to my list.
This is so stunning. We love hiking, and having such a beautiful scenery is a bonus.
A fire behind the waterfall? That’s really interesting! I’d love to see it myself!
This is such a beautiful spot! It really looks like Brushy Creek park here in Austin, but just way better!
My dad grew up practically down the road from here, so beautiful I’d love to go!
That is so cool! I would love to see it! I’ll have to add this place to my bucket list should we ever make a trip to New York!
Woah! That’s amazing. That flame pic looks cool. I am gonna write it down in my travel book. I will be going to Niagara Falls so don’t wanna miss it.
Wow , this looks amazing ! I am so happy you could also post a picture of the flame because it was hard to believe there could be a flame in the waterfall. Never seen something this amazing before!
I’ve been to New York so many times but every time I go, I went to the city. I’d love to drive around the more quiet area like these and explore.
How cool is this? I love hiking to waterfalls with my family. This is such a unique one. Adding to my must see list!
I swear to God, nature can be so freaking weird and awesome at the same time. Having seen some of the weird earth bubbling, glaciers and volcanic activity in Iceland I thought I had seen it all. The flame right behind a waterfall? This really does sound and look like something I would love to see with my own eyes.
One of my favorite things to do. Seems very cool and Amazing. too bad we are not new yorker but will really love to visit someday.
The wonders of nature are truly amazing. The natural gas flame behind a waterfall is definitely a sight to see! I have a good friend who lives near that area. I will ask her if she’s been there.
How cool! I’ve never heard of this but it’s something I’d definitely love to see. Thanks for introducing us to this little gem of a natural attraction.
I am about 4 hrs from Niagara falls so this could be a great roadtrip opportunity for me! I can’t believe there is an actual flame behind the waterfalls, that is so cool. I am going to have to check it out soon!
That is really cool that there’s actual flames behind those waterfalls! I have never been to Niagara Falls so I’m actually looking forward to planning a trip here soon after reading this article! Also, my sister is heading to Toronto in a couple of weeks so I’ll make sure to pass this blog post to her! Thanks for sharing!
That is so awesome. Reminds me of a fountain my friends made just recently with a fire in the middle of it. This would be such a cool place to visit in NY.
I agree. It’s definitely one of those places that you’re skeptical about when your hear about it. It’s really unusual and I’d totally want to see it by myself. The hike doesn’t seem too difficult too to reach this place, so no wonder it’s crowded.
I can imagine what photo opportunities can come along with visiting this Eternal Flame Falls. Nature is so strange and this natural gas flame is something I was never aware of before. It is a great place to visit.
I have heard a lot about Niagara Falls but never heard of the flame. Sounds magical.
I’ve visited Niagara Falls so many times (I’m from Toronto), and have never heard of this! Looks like I have to visit the US side, but that’s such a sight! Were you able to go behind the waterfall for a closeup?
So interesting that the flame manages to stay lit behind a waterfall! My family lives in Toronto, so we always go to Niagara Falls on the Canada side, but next time we’ll have to venture down to the U.S. side and check out upstate NY!
That’s such a cool feature! Can I write that about nature lol, I’m not sure. I’ve never heard of eternal flame falls, so it’s really good to know where I can find it the next time I visit New York state. A 50 minute drive from Niagara Falls isn’t bad either!
This is such an interesting phenomenon. The fire adds to the allure of the waterfalls. Is it just a small flame.
We just went there last summer – what a cool place! The hike was nice and the flame is pretty cool.
That is crazy-cool! I will have to ask my husband about that – he spent part of his growing-up years in central New York, so I wonder if he has ever been there…
That flame is one of the coolest things I’ve heard of! I hope to get to see it one day! I’ve always wanted to see Niagara Falls and this just adds to the desire.
