The weather may not be suitable and there would be a lot of dirt everywhere.

How to host a party in the wilderness

Steps To Host A Party In The Wilderness

1. Choose Where and When To Have The Party

How to host a party in the wilderness 1There are so many outdoor locations in the middle of the wild or nature that you can host a party. You would just have to choose what kind of party you want. Do you want it between tall trees or next to a frozen lake with snow all around you? They are all possible, just choose and make sure to check the weather that day and if you need a permit to have a party there. Inform your guest about the weather before heading out to the location. Also, take the sun or rain into consideration. You may have to get a tent or some kind of material to protect the party guests from direct sun rays or rain.

2. Choose A Theme For Your Party

Most parties have a theme. There are so many great ideas on Pinterest and other websites. But, when you are in the wild, you do not really need to pick a theme. The trees, birds, and all parts of nature will be the theme for your party.

Think about seatings for the invites, Do you want to place blankets on the floor and have a huge picnic? Or do you want to rent a long table and chairs and place them next to a frozen lake over the snow? If you choose the latter, make sure you know the number of guests that are coming. You don’t want anyone standing. Whatever you choose, you know that this party will be one of a kind.

3. Create Invitations

Create custom invitationsThe invitations can be sent online or by mail. If you choose online invitations, that would save you a  lot of money. You should keep in mind that the invitations should have clear instructions and details about the location of the party. You may describe things around the place in order to avoid any confusion. You could also place a sign near the area. Once you are out in the wild, your guest would not be able to contact you because there is most likely no service out there.

4. Choose Your Menu

Create your menuEvery party needs food. If it is a small short party, you could provide only snacks and refreshments. If it is going to be hosted around mealtimes and for a long period of time, you will need food. You can actually hire people to cook on a wood fire. Your guests may enjoy watching this type of cooking and they can enjoy the hot food. Or, you could ask people to bring food with them. It would be a nice potluck.

It is important to know how many people are actually coming to your party. This will help you estimate how much food and party favors you actually need. If you don’t get enough, it would be very difficult if not impossible to get more food out there.

Try to remember your guest’s meal preferences. Ensure to take this into consideration. You can provide a buffet. This would solve many problems. Whatever you choose, make sure to have everything in time for the party.

5. Plan Activities

Plan ActivitiesYes, you are going to be outdoors. You could enjoy the scenery and talk. But, having a few activities or games can help ease the awkwardness at first and even create more laughter. Think about outdoor games or things you cannot play at a normal party. This would make the party stand out!

Some outdoor activities you can play in the wild include:

  • Place blankets on the floor and play truth or dare.
  • You can all go on a hike.
  • Go canoeing and race each other.
  • You can all share personal stories.
  • You can ask your guests to bring a picture of themselves so you can all hang them on the tree.
  • Buy a book with all the types of plants and animals and discover which are around you.

6. Set Up A Schedule For Your Party

A key element to host a party in the wilderness has to be keeping people occupied. Every party should have a schedule, especially one in the wilderness. It organizes everything and prevents boredom. Set a time for eating and refreshments. An hour to an hour and a half is good for eating. Set a time for activities and just talking. That could be another hour or two. This would give your guests a sense of how long the party would be and what they should be doing at each moment of time.

7. Provide Insect Repellant

Provide insect repellantBuy more than one insect repellant for your guests. Keep them somewhere everyone can see. When they first come, make sure they apply some. There are so many bugs and insects in the wild. The last thing you want is guests going home early because they feel itchy. You can tell the guests to wear some before coming but we both know someone would forget or need some more. So, just save your energy and buy some.

The bad thing about insect repellent is that not everyone likes to apply them because it is sticky. The good news is that natural repellents are now available. You can place them around the party and they will work like a charm.

8. First-Aid Box

You will be in the middle of the wilderness. So many injuries can occur. Make sure to have a first aid box to help anyone with a small injury. Someone can get stung or bit by an insect or someone may get cut by a tree branch or a thorn. Stay prepared and practice wilderness safety.

9. Follow The Leave No Trace Principles

I totally encourage you to learn and practice the seven Leave No Trace principles. First, as mentioned before, you should plan and prepare before going out. The wilderness is dangerous. Camp on durable surfaces. Make sure to clean up after yourselves. Do not take anything with you from the wild. Be careful when you create a campfire. Respect life in the wilderness. Finally, try not to do anything that may bother other people, like don’t be too loud. Follow these principles to help protect our planet and respect others.

In Conclusion

There are so many things that can go wrong in the wilderness, but it is still worth hosting a party out there. You would have a blast and your party would be one of a kind. So, follow these steps to minimize the risks and remember to enjoy yourself and have fun with your guests!

I’m bookmarking this for future use. I’ve never had a party hosted in the wild. My equally adventurous friends would definitely be excited about this idea. But, yes careful planning has to be done. Thanks for these steps and tips.

This is such a fun idea! I absolutely love being outside when the weather is beautiful. I often work on my back deck where I can enjoy the fresh air, so why not have a get-together outdoors instead of inside?!?

This is such a great idea for a party! Pictures on trees, a canoe race, or even a contest on who can name the most plants or wildlife!

This is cool. I have never thought of throwing a party in wildnerness, but I love the idea so much! I’d definitely choose some lake and some outdoor bbq! Thanks for the tip about being super clear in the invitations, because as you say, when you go off-grid and they can’t find the place it can be frustrating. Providing insect repellent is a very good idea too.

The First Aid kit is an excellent suggestion. It’s the last thing I would have thought of. You didn’t mention the Party Potty. That might influence my location choice greatly! It might be a fun “potluck” for everybody to bring some kind of food on a stick to be roasted over the fire. But then I like the idea of the hired chef actually doing the cooking. Great topic for an article!

This is such a great idea – I totally see myself spending an entire day with my friends in the wilderness. Also, as I love to cook and prepare buffets, I’d probably enjoy the preparations at least as much as the party itself. This is really something that brings families and friends together in a fun and totally healthy way. Very inspirational.

Parties these days become really complicated events. I used to through a lot of parties when I was in my early 30s, but things were simpler at the time: no theme picking, no printed invitations. However, from what you are describing this was a very special event, so obviously it needed a lot of preparation. Obviously, if you host a big party in the wilderness you’ll have to be concerned about organizing it properly, as there will be no help close by if you miss something, lol. The insect repellent seems like a must-have in the wilderness, for sure.

I do love the idea of hosting a party in some wilderness location. Fun to do for a special occasion. I love the idea of picking a theme so the food and decorations can evolve from there. I love that you finish with “leave no trace”. The summer parties on the beach here at home have left disgusting messes on the beach and in the park. Makes it hard for people who do want to do things responsibly.
