Women Living Off The Land

And Things to Consider Before Doing So

By Dawn Greer

Women know inherently that anything that boys can do, we can do as well, if not better. While women don’t have the brute strength that is sometimes required for certain jobs, they have the ability to organize and think outside of the box in ways that enable them to get jobs done without muscles. My father used to tell me, “If you work smart, you don’t have to work hard.” This is true and I learn more about what he meant with each day that goes by.

So, while you may not be able to carry 5-gallons of water in a bucket at one time, you can figure out ways to move it. You can read and learn to do things that will enable you to pump your own water and create your own power. You can do anything that you set out to do and more women than ever before are setting out to live off the land, all on their own.

It Won’t Be Easy

This probably goes without saying, but you should expect everything that can possibly go wrong to do just that. Plan everything out on paper, from water resources to power options. Know that you will be faced with challenges at every single stage of the game. If you are someone who can roll with the flow; if you have an attitude of ‘get ‘er done’ rather than sitting around and moping, then you’ll have what it takes to be successful.

Women Living Off The Land determination to succeed

Always Have a Plan B, and a C, and a D, and …

You will inevitably find that you thought you’d researched every possibility and you still have an issue that arises. How will you handle it? For example, if you installed your own solar panels and you wake one morning to find they are not charging, do you have a power back-up plan? Can you go without power until you solve the problem? Are you capable of problem-solving until you find the problem? Can you afford to pay someone to fix it for you?

It is possible to learn how to do these things and the first thing you have to let go of is fear. The worst thing that can happen is that you don’t get something fixed. If you try to fix it, you’ve got a 50/50 shot at figuring out the issue and solving the problem. Many times, women allow fear to stop them in their tracks and keep them from trying things. This is a matter of not having self-confidence. Once you’ve tried something and been successful, your confidence swells until you are finding yourself trying out all sorts of things that are outside of your comfort zone.

It is very important to know about them before taking this 50mg generic viagra solution. why not try this out brand cialis They are also used to cure benign prostatic hyperplasia a phase where prostate glands enlarged than normal and stands as an obstruction in the way of urine output. Women Living Off The Land is doable

Believe That You Can

While it is true that you may not have the strength to lift building materials over your head, that doesn’t mean that you can’t figure out how to get them in place. A block and tackle, with a horse or a car attached to a chain, can lift anything in place for you and you might make more trips with a smaller bucket, but you can get any job done.

Women Living Off The Land new home in the far west

Your mind is just as capable of problem-solving and that is the thing you must remember. Where there is a will, there is a way and with so much information available on the internet, and groups on social media to help answer off-grid questions, there is no reason at all not to try things for yourself.

Many women are building small homes and making a place for themselves and small children post-divorce. Some younger women are deciding to do their own thing before committing to a life of marriage and children. Other women are widowed with grown children who just want a peaceful place to call home that is all theirs, without bills.

The first step you need to take is believing in yourself and deciding that this is what you are going to do. Commit to it, take notes, read everything you can find about living off the grid, and then take the leap of faith. You’ll be glad you joined so many Women Living Off The Land.

I agree with you 100%. It should always be a backup plan and you need to build your life the way you can do it yourself and not wait for someone to do it for you.

Wow I loved reading the ideas which you have shared in your post. The water and power part – two essentials and how to cope if there is a failure. Yes agree to it. Alternate plans should be in place, that’s tough but practical I know. I think that would need a certain amount of experience and intelligence. Believing, yes 100%, you need to trust yourself. Great article

I would definitely love to live off the land.. working on our garden now more actively, as well as learning how to make do with what we have before the next shopping run, has taught me that there is so much more we can do better

Thanks, Dawn for the reminders and tips. I always believe in spontaneous actions but we should always have a plan B, C…. Z. You’ll never know what will happen so it’s better to be prepared than nothing at all.

As a single mom, I recognize the part of your article that talked about where there’s a will there’s a way. I do most of my own car and home repairs. Going on a camping trip would be a breeze! And actually a welcome one. 🙂

This is the dream. My father has taught me so many practical life skills that would help make this happen. I’d love to live off the grid and enjoy a slower pace of life instead of the constant rat race I live on today.

All you have to do is decide that you will. Then, start taking one step at a time to get there. Remember this, “in order to explore the ocean, you must first lose sight of the shore.” Not sure who wrote that but my first college professor wrote it on the board, day one. It had a profound impact.

Interesting. Like a modern day Little House on the Prairie. I like the idea of multiple plans and backups because living off the land isn’t easy to do and give up modern conveniences.

Even as a young girl, I dreamed of having a little log cabin in the mountains. I love the outdoors and it would be so peaceful to witness beautiful sunrises and sunsets from your window. But that did not happen though. I was born, raised and still living in this urban concrete jungle. Maybe when we retire or get into that empty nest phase of life, my husband and I would seriously consider moving to the country or to the suburbs and enjoy a laid back lifestyle.

My parents used to sit by the kitchen table and talk about going to Alaska. They would get out the maps and plan; dream big dreams. Then, suddenly, my father died and they never got to go. My advice? I’d you want anything, don’t wait. Tomorrow isn’t promised.
