America’s National Park System is made up of 59 unique parks across the country. Whether you’re searching for extreme adventure, seeking peaceful solitude or planning a family vacation, the National Park System has something for everyone. It most certainly can be overwhelming to choose what park to visit, when to visit, and what not to miss during a visit.
There are 1000’s of guide books out there to assist you in planning your trip to any of the 59 National Parks across the country. You may be asking yourself, “Where do I even start?” The definitive new guide, Moon USA National Parks: The Complete Guide to All 59 Parks by long-time National Park advocate and former guide, Becky Lomax, comes highly recommended.
Lomax kicks off the guide with a short, but stunning introduction and tribute to the park system. “These 59 National parks are masterpieces spread across the United States. The artistry of nature paints their rain forests with mossy green, their lakes a vivid blue, and their canyons in shifting oranges and reds.” The easy to follow, comprehensive guide book provides planning inspiration with practical information to assist all travellers find their perfect destination. The book then offers a list of Lomax’s Top 10 park experiences. These include watching Old Faithful blow in Yellowstone, gazing up at the giant redwoods in Sequoia, and hiking the Narrows in Zion. I had the pleasure of watching Old Faithful for the first time in the Summer of 2018, it is a can’t miss experience for sure.
Lomax organizes the 59 National Parks in the book by eight regions, based on location. This makes planning epic road trips easier, as you can plan stops at multiple parks in one trip. I am currently using the guide to help me plan a trip to the Southwest region this Spring, where we will be stopping at Arches and Canyonlands.

As a lifelong resident of Colorado, I am blessed to live only 45 minutes from of one of the most visited parks in the country, Rocky Mountain National Park. I frequent the park 1-2 times per month on average, so am most familiar with it. For each of the 59 parks, Lomax provides a map, a short introduction, entrance, visitor center and fee information, and tips for planning your time. A key feature of the guide book that I really like is that Lomax offers her top three experiences for each park. For the parks that I have personally visited, I would also highly recommend the same experiences.
Another key feature of Lomax’s guide that I really enjoy is her “One Day” section. For each of the 59 parks, Lomax describes the must do’s if you only have one day to visit a park. For Rocky Mountain this included things such as visiting the Bear Lake area, driving Trail Ridge Road and visiting the Alpine Visitor’s Center. I very much agree that driving Trail Ridge Road is a can’t miss experience.
Moon USA National Parks: The Complete Guide to All 59 Parks by Becky Lomax is a very comprehensive and well-written guide book. The guide is organized well and very reader-friendly. No matter what type of adventure you are seeking, the guide is sure to have something for you. Whether you are seeking safe encounters with wildlife, peaceful solitude, winter activities or all those can’t miss locations for the perfect selfie opportunity, the guide has it. Wondering where to stay during your visits? Lomax includes lodging and camping information and many other practical tips for each park.

I ordered this national park guide because it was the newest guide and because it listed “detailed maps” in the description. I’ve added photos of the maps from Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon since I recently visited both.
