The Hidden Helpers of Everyday Health and Home

While the quote above by the beloved Fred Rogers was describing mostly rescue workers or those at the scene of a scary event or natural disaster aftermath, many hidden helpers work day in and day out to help others within their homes, often providing a high quality of life for those who would otherwise be neglected or forgotten. The following is a look at just some instances in which hidden helpers might be part of a person’s healthcare or home life:

Preparing Meals

One practical way that hidden helpers operate is to provide meals for others. This can include them volunteering at a mission or instead involve cooking meals for the individuals who live in their homes. These individuals might not be able to prepare their own meals, so this act of service is life-saving for many. In addition, some community hidden helpers can include those who volunteer to take meals to shut-ins through various organizations and churches.

Providing Transportation

Another way that helpers make a difference in daily life for many people is by providing transportation. Many unsung heroes provide the car ride individuals need to be seen by their doctor or take those without transportation to a local grocery store to buy food. When you have the means of transportation and can easily get from point A to point B, it can be tempting to overlook the immense privilege that transportation offers.

After all, anyone who has ever needed to visit a doctor or a store can attest to the very real need that transportation meets. Of course, in many communities, some services provide free transportation for elderly individuals or those who meet certain qualifications. However, individuals who are just regular people who give freely of their transportation to help others are most certainly worthy of admiration.

Offering Encouragement Through Movement

When individuals are down and out or in need, they often neglect their own physical fitness and overall well-being. Therefore, some of the hidden helpers you might not realize are working all the while are those who help facilitate a healthy lifestyle through physical therapy or exercise programs. These expertly designed programs ensure individuals remain active and stay as mobile as possible, which provides a better quality of life. These hidden helpers might come to a home and help with physical fitness, or instead operate at a facility.

Keeping Things Neat and Clean

Hidden helpers at home often work to keep the environment safe and clean for all those who reside within. This is especially important if an individual is suffering from a medical condition that requires a sterile or at least clean environment to heal. Hidden helpers are those who throw in a load of laundry, clean the dishes, wipe down the toilets, and more. Their efforts might go unnoticed except when they are not completed, then it’s obvious. Having a helper who can clean and keep things neat is immensely important, especially for those who can’t physically do the job themselves. Clutter can be a trip hazard as well as increase fire risk, so keeping a home neat is worthwhile.

Providing Companionship

Another way that helpers provide for others and make life better in general is by providing companionship. We, as humans, are made to interact with others. We are not created to be isolated. We yearn for community. Unfortunately, when a person is unable to leave their home, companionship can be greatly missed, leading to feelings of depression, isolation, and loneliness.

Thankfully, hidden helpers often provide companionship for those who can’t seek it out in other ways. This is an act that might seem self-sacrificing, but is one from which both parties benefit. For example, often younger individuals who provide companionship for older people will learn a great deal from them about life and end up getting a blessing from the entire process as well.

Providing Medical Advice and Care

Social workers within the medical field and various facilities often help individuals get the most out of their medical care and assist them in finding additional resources they might need. Although this is a job, so it might not be quantified as a “hidden helper,” the advice and guidance these professionals provide patients and their families should not be overlooked. It is immensely helpful to have an expert guide you through the complexities of a diagnosis and ensure that you are ready to face whatever is to come. Hidden helpers can also provide medical care for those who are struggling to do things for themselves, helping them bathe, brush their teeth, and more.

Providing Guidance

Hidden helpers can also serve the role of helpers by providing various types of guidance for individuals in need. This can include offering to help with financial statements or sorting medication. It can also include everything already mentioned , along with providing advice or counseling. Hidden helpers who provide guidance can walk families through end-of-life plans. They can help them strategize for the future and even plan a fun getaway.

Many times, especially as individuals age, their ability to understand the nuances of technology decreases, and they can get easily confused. Thankfully, helpers can provide them with guidance in a variety of ways and even help them get the aid they need to get specific medical equipment and more. Hidden helpers in terms of providing guidance are very much appreciated and necessary.

Looking Around for Those in Need

Again, as we go beyond the situations that Fred Rogers described in the beginning, hidden helpers are everywhere. They are individuals who are always ready to lend a helping hand. They are there when there has been a natural disaster, perhaps handing out water, offering to wash clothing, or even providing food for rescue workers.

They are everywhere, and even in everyday life, they are there, providing a smile to the downtrodden or giving up a seat on the bus. They are the hidden helpers that go unpraised but never unnoticed. Becoming a hidden helper is a great way to ensure a better life for all those around you in terms of both their home life and their overall wellness.

This list is basically what we are trying to do for my father. He now lives by himself just next door, but he is still able and still goes on with running a law office, and joins his church activities.

This hit me a little in the feels. It’s so true how we take those little behind-the-scenes things for granted, especially when we’re out camping and they quietly make everything easier. It made me think of my old camp mug, which has been through it all with me.
